On the Algebraic Components of the Sl(2,c) Character Varieties of Knot Exteriors

چکیده
We show that if a knot exterior satisfies certain conditions, then it has finite cyclic coverings with arbitrarily large numbers of nontrivial algebraic components in their SL2(C)-character varieties (Theorem A). As an example, these conditions hold for hyperbolic punctured torus bundles over the circle (Theorem B). We investigate in more detail the finite cyclic covers of the figure-eight knot exterior and show that for every integer m there exists a finite covering such that its SL2(C)-character variety contains curve components which have associated boundary slopes whose distance is larger than m (Theorem C). Lastly, we show that given an integer m, there exists a hyperbolic knot exterior in the 3-sphere that has a finite cyclic covering such that its SL2(C)-character variety contains more than m norm curve components each of which contains the character of a discrete faithful presentation of the fundamental group of the covering space (Theorem D).

متن کاملThe SL(2,C)-Character Varieties of Torus Knots
Let G be the fundamental group of the complement of the torus knot of type (m,n). This has a presentation G = 〈x, y |xm = yn〉. We find the geometric description of the character variety X(G) of characters of representations of G into SL(2,C).

We show that the A-polynomial A(L,M) of a 2-bridge knot b(p, q) is irreducible if p is prime, and if (p − 1)/2 is also prime and q , 1 then the L-degree of A(L,M) is (p−1)/2. This shows that the AJ conjecture relating the A-polynomial and the colored Jones polynomial holds true for these knots, according to work of the second author. We also study relationships between the A-polynomial of a 2-b...

1 The motivation and basic idea. A knot is a smooth simple closed curve, K; in the three-sphere, S 3 : The knot exterior is the compact three-manifold X = S 3 ? (K) where (K) is an open tubular neighborhood. The group 1 (X) is called the knot group associated to the knot. We recall that the boundary of X is a torus T and there are two simple closed curves on X called a longitude and meridian wh...
متن کاملOn Character Varieties of Two-bridge Knot Groups
We find explicit models for the PSL2(C)and SL2(C)-character varieties of the fundamental groups of complements in S of an infinite family of two-bridge knots that contains the twist knots. We compute the genus of the components of these character varieties, and deduce upper bounds on the degree of the associated trace fields. We also show that these knot complements are fibered if and only if t...
